The Most Simple Way to Fix Your Form
Footwork is all about precision, control, and flow. But there’s one common mistake I see all the time, even from dancers with solid fundamentals: half-assing step 5 in the 6-step.
You either do it or you don’t—there’s no in-between.
Why Step 5 Matters
The 6-step is a foundation of breaking footwork. Each step has a purpose, creating a circular motion that maintains momentum and balance. Step 5, in particular, is crucial because it sets you up for the final transition back to step 1. If you’re lazy with it—maybe placing your foot too close to your body or skipping the step altogether—your flow will suffer.
But What About 5-Steps?
Don’t get me wrong, you can skip step 5 entirely if you’re intentionally doing a 5-step variation. I love 5-steps myself and use them often to generate more momentum and power. But if you’re aiming for a clean 6-step, you need to fully commit to step 5. That means placing your foot with intention, keeping your movement circular, and ensuring your transitions stay smooth.
